GLOBE Teacher Training Workshops Available Through Operation RubyThroat

If you've ever wanted to be part of The GLOBE Program but haven't had
time for the full week of training in soils, hydrology, atmosphere,
climate, and other earth science protocols, "Operation RubyThroat:
The Hummingbird Project" now offers an alternative.

Operation RubyThroat--administered by Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont
Natural History near York SC--is the first Web-based GLOBE protocol
that involves animal behavior observations. Bill Hilton Jr., as
principal investigator for Operation RubyThroat, is now authorized to
train teachers in GLOBE hummingbird protocols and to designate those
educators' schools as GLOBE sites.

Hilton will hold a GLOBE/Operation RubyThroat Teacher Training
Workshop during the annual fall meeting of the South Carolina Science
Council and other professional organizations, but he's also available
at other times for workshops at schools in South Carolina, and
beyond. If you have at least six teachers at a school or within a
school district who would like to be trained in the GLOBE hummingbird
protocols in time to use them during 2003, contact Hilton via
mailto:info@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx to arrange a three-hour workshop after
school, on a Saturday, or during the summer. Teacher participants
receive site identification codes that allow any student at their
schools to submit hummingbird data to the GLOBE Web site. A $20 fee
per teacher helps offset costs of materials and travel; an additional
fee may be requested for travel and/or lodging for more distant sites.

By participating in Operation RubyThroat, you and your students will
join others from the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and all seven Central
American countries as they monitor migration and feeding and nesting
behavior in Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. You can view the GLOBE
hummingbird protocols at http://www.globe.gov and glean a wealth of
information about hummingbirds from the Operation RubyThroat Web site
