Mitnick busts bomb hoaxer

Ex-hacker Kevin Mitnick has helped a small town in Detroit, Michigan track down 
an individual who made bomb threats to the local high school. Several times, 
River Rouge High School received bomb threats over telephone during school 
hours, forcing an evacuation. Detective Lieutenant John Keck obtained a search 
warrant to track the source of the phone calls, but SBC Ameritech was unable to 
find it. Mr. Keck suspected the culprit may have been spoofing Caller ID, 
leading him to seek expert advice from Mr. Mitnick, who demonstrated spoofing 
techniques on TechTV. Mr. Mitnick ruled out Caller ID spoofing, but gave Mr. 
Keck a crash course in telephony, pointing him to the right questions to ask. A 
'terminating number' search led to a cell phone owned by a fifteen year old 
student, who was nabbed when he tried to call in another bomb threat while in 
class. Mr. Mitnick notes that no real hacking was involved, and credits Tsutomu 
Shimomura, who used the same techniques to capture Mr. Mitnick in 1995.
