Subject: Famous Speeches On Line -- Network Nuggets

***  [[[  FAMOUS SPEECHES ON LINE  ]]]  ***

http://www.historychannel.com/speeches

This is for Modern History and Journalism teachers,
with some items of interest in other subjects like
science, the arts, and law.

Nuggets featured the CBC Archives (archives.cbc.ca)
awhile ago, with its indexed excerpts of memorable
speeches and newscasts in Canadian history. Today
we mention a U.S. counterpart, the collection of
600 excerpts from famous speeches at History Channel.

This collection is more international and has
more subject variety than the CBC collection. It
emphasizes U.S. speechmakers of course, but it
includes Edward VIII's abdication speech, both
Churchill and Clement Atlee, and UN leaders like
U Thant and Kofe Annan. You even find speeches by
composers Aaron Copeland, Benjamin Britten, and
Irving Berlin.

A note about using both archives in class: while
listening to a speech or news report yourself, you
can jot down the timing point of the best part.
Then you can start the speech at that point for
your students, using the slider along the bottom
of the onscreen player.

The benefit, of course, is "we now take you live" to
events in 20th century history.

History Channel's speeches run in RealPlayer. The
collection is presented with very little advertising.
