"Society, Technology, and the Future of Transportation"
DOT Sponsored Essay Contest
DEADLINE DATE: March 15, 2003

ABOUT THE TRANSPORTATION ESSAY CONTEST

This contest is sponsored by the U. S. Department of Transportation
and is open to students throughout the United States. Winning essays
will be placed on the Garrett A. Morgan Technology and Transportation
Futures Program website.

The purpose of the essay contest is to generate interest and
awareness of transportation needs for the future.

WHO MAY ENTER

Individual students may enter.  Each student will be placed in
appropriate categories according to their grade.

ENTRY CATEGORIES, THEMATIC AREAS, AND LENGTH

Grades             Thematic
Areas
 Essay Length

* Grades 1 - 2: 50 - 250 words with illustrations on "Need for
Transportation"
* Grades 3 - 5: 250 - 500 words with illustrations on "Future of
Transportation"

Environment and Energy Concerns"
* Grades 9 - 12: 500 - 1000 words with illustrations, "Transportation
Technology and Societal Changes"
Essays should address the future of transportation and its importance
to society with special attention to the thematic area for the entry
category for the student. Illustrations may be included to improve
readability and impact.

TEACHERS, PARENTS, AND GUARDIANS

Teachers, parents, and guardians are encouraged to guide students
with this effort but the work should be the original work of the
student.  Some guidance on the approach and content will probably be
helpful.  Parts of the Garrett A. Morgan Technology and
Transportation Futures Program web site (http://education.dot.gov ),
the Agency education specific sites (See
http://education.dot.gov/agencies.html), and the transportation
agencies main sites (see http://www.dot.gov) may provide helpful age-
related resources to better understand the transportation field.  The
essay can address any and all aspects of future transportation but
should focus on the areas identified for each grade category.  Some
guidance/ reference material to help with developing essays on
transportation are provided here for help and students are encouraged
to consult with others to gain information about transportation and
future trends.  School librarians and English teachers are primary
resources for developing an entry.

INDUSTRY AND LABOR PARTNERS

Industry and labor partners are welcome to join with the Department
to encourage participation. These partners may provide additional
prizes and recognition appropriate for this multimodal transportation
essay contest. Potential partners are asked to indicate their
interest to DOT headquarters or local DOT agency representatives and
mechanisms will be set up to coordinate efforts.

JUDGING

Contest entries will be reviewed by a panel of judges comprised of
prominent individuals in the fields of transportation and education.
Winning essays will be selected based on the following criteria:

*Overall excitement and inspiration the essay portrays about the
future directions of transportation
*Information and literary content of the essay
*Writing style and grammatical correctness
*Creative, interesting, and engaging qualities of the material
presented
*Appropriateness of the essay for the level of intended student
audience

Winners will be announced in May 2003.
