Mad for Metro-North, a Rail Rider Is on a Mission By MICHAEL MALONE Published: September 23, 2011 New York Timeshttp://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/25/nyregion/ emily-mosers-mission-is-to-photograph-all-of-metro-north.html
. A shorter URL for the above link: . http://tinyurl.com/3sgepb6 . .EVERY weekday, Emily Moser rides the Metro-North Railroad from Goldens Bridge to White Plains, N.Y., and unlike most of the other passengers, she relishes every moment of the round trip, which takes an hour and 10 minutes. Where others see generic train stations whose functional, if uninspired, construction hides hints of past glory, Ms. Moser sees art.
.A graphic designer and amateur photographer, Ms. Moser has, for the past two and a half years, maintained a blog, I Ride the Harlem Line, devoted to the joys of Metro-North. Readers can find a rich trove of archival photos, maps, postcards and advertisements she has dug up showing New York trains and stations from long-gone eras and her sly musings about the more peculiar passengers with whom she rides. But the blogs centerpiece is the Panorama Project, a series of photos of Metro-North stations that she has been shooting since the spring of 2010.
.The work began when Ms. Moser and her mother were driving around lost in Dutchess County and found themselves at the station in Wassaic, N.Y. Moser took out her camera, shot a series of offbeat photos and later stitched them together using Photoshop for the distinctive panoramic effect that defines the project. To date, she has photographed 70 of the 125 stations in the Metro-North system.
.I said, Im going to do this for all the stations on the Harlem line, she recalled over lunch at the Valhalla Crossing, a bar and grill in a converted train station. People convinced me after I finished that to do the New Haven line and, once youve done two, you may as well do the rest. (Metro-North has five lines: New Haven, Harlem, Hudson, Port Jervis and Pascack Valley.)
.Ms. Moser, 26, has developed a dedicated following of historians, so-called railfans, railroad employees and fellow commuters. The site averages about 9,200 page views a month.
.Emily truly has the mind of a historian, and the area she happened to pick is railroads, said Ted Bowen, customer service manager for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and Metro-North Railroad, speaking unofficially (the railroad has no connection to the project).
.Ms. Mosers passion for the railroad developed after she started commuting to her job as a graphic designer at Fujifilm in the Valhalla office complex called the Summit three years ago. She is nearly blind in her left eye, so driving to work is not an option. There are already enough bad drivers on the road, she said. They really dont need another.

Looking Back at Metro-North's Harlem Division http://www.railroad.net/articles/railfanning/harlemdivision/index.php . . Harlem Line From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harlem_Line .Metro-North's Harlem Line, originally chartered as the New York & Harlem Railroad, is an 82-mile (132 km) commuter rail line running north from New York City into eastern Dutchess County. The lower 53 miles (86 km) from Grand Central Terminal to Southeast, in Putnam County, are electrified with a third rail and has two (or more) tracks; north of that point, trains use diesel locomotives on a single track. The diesel trains run as a shuttle on the northern end of the line except during rush hours, when they run as expresses to or from Grand Central. There is also one direct roundtrip to Grand Central on weekends. While the line has traditionally served to bring commuters from Westchester County to jobs in the city, in recent years it has begun to see more "reverse commuting", as Bronx residents use it to reach jobs in Southern Westchester where many stations are within walking distance of city centers. The northern reaches of the line are also close enough to Western Massachusetts to enable residents of part of that region to commute to jobs in the city as well, albeit at a considerable expense in time and money.
.With 38 stations, the Harlem Line has the most of any Metro-North main line. Its northern terminal, Wassaic, is the northernmost station in the system. It is the only Metro-North line used exclusively by that carrier (no use by Amtrak, though CSX services freight customers as far north as Mount Vernon) and the only one that uses the entirety of existing track. Metro-North has assigned it the color code blue, used as trim on station signs and spot color on printed timetables. The blue color-coding appears to have started with timetables issued by predecessor New York Central as far back as 1965.

Metro-North Railroad .The Metro-North Commuter Railroad (reporting mark MN), trading as MTA Metro-North Railroad, or, more commonly, Metro-North, is a suburban commuter rail service that is run and managed by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), an authority of New York State. It is the second busiest commuter railroad in the United States as measured in terms of overall monthly ridership, a position it has held since the fourth quarter of 2001.[1] MetroNorth runs service between New York City to its northern suburbs in New York and Connecticut. Trains terminate in places respective to their branch line; these locals include, in New York State, in Port Jervis, Spring Valley, Poughkeepsie, and Wassaic; in Connecticut, in New Canaan, Danbury, Waterbury, and New Haven. Metro-North also provides local rail service within New York City with a reduced fare.
.The MTA, which also operates the New York City Transit Authority buses and subways, as well as the Long Island Rail Road, has jurisdiction, through Metro-North, for use of the railroad lines on the western and eastern portion of the Hudson River in New York State. Service on the western side of the Hudson is operated by New Jersey Transit under contract with the MTA. There are 120 stations operated by Metro-North.
