Amtrak Ordered to Make Tech Fixes at Dangerous Curves

The Federal Railroad Administration has ordered Amtrak to make a series of
immediate safety improvements on the Northeast Corridor following this
weeks deadly derailment, including analyzing risks at all curves along the
route and immediately making technological fixes to prevent accidents in
the most dangerous ones.

Federal railway officials said Saturday they also ordered Amtrak to ensure
that current accident prevention technology being used for southbound
trains at the Philadelphia derailment site is also being used to increase
safety for trains headed north.

The officials also instructed Amtrak to put up more speed limit signs all
along the corridor, which runs from Washington to Boston.

Increasing the amount and frequency of signage provides a redundant means
to remind engineers and conductors of the authorized speed, in addition to
information they receive from" Amtraks automated systems and other
operations documents, the railway administration said in a statement.

Acting Federal Railroad Administrator Sarah Feinberg called the measures
initial steps.

Feinberg said in a statement that while the full implementation of broad
computerized safety improvements which are known as Positive Train Control
and have a year-end deadline is the most important step to improve safety

railroads.
