Four people were killed when a passenger train derailed in northwestern
Spain on Friday, with excessive speed suspected as being the cause of the
crash.

The train was travelling from the Galician city of Vigo to Porto in
northern Portugal when the accident happened near the town of O Porri at
around 9.25 on Friday morning.

The Portuguese driver of the train is among the four dead as is the
Spanish guard who was on board. The other two victims confirmed so far are
a US citizen and a 23-year-old man from Vigo.

Forty-nine other passengers were hurt in the crash, with one person
remaining in a critical condition in hospital.
.
The 9.02am train from Vigo derailed when going around a bend in the track,
200 metres from the station at O Porrino, where it was not due to stop. It
struck the base of a road bridge going over the track causing one carriage
to partially overturn before coming to a halt after also hitting a metal
post.

The Spanish railway operator Adif announced immediately after the crash
that it had launched an investigation.

But the first indications suggested that excessive speed may have been the
cause of the accident.

Speaking after visiting the crash site, Spains infrastructure minister,
Rafael Catal said that improvement work had been in progress on the line
at the point at which the accident took place, meaning that any train
passing through had to be diverted onto an alternative track.

There was a special speed limit in place on the alternative track of 30
km/h.
.
Mr Catalalso said that the train, built in the early 1980s, had passed an
extremely rigorous safety inspection in Portugal the day before the crash.
