Britain's Obesity Crisis Will Bankrupt the NHS Warns TV's Dr Hilary Jones
The NHS will be bankrupt within 20 years
if Britain does not get the obesity epidemic under control,
Dr Hilary Jones has warned.

The soaring cost of treating Type-2 diabetes, which is caused by unhealthy
lifestyles, is in danger of exhausting the health service's resources, he
said.

He condemned successive governments for adding to the crisis by selling
off school playing fields and "taking the competition out of school
sports".
.
He believes taxing unhealthy food to stem health problems should also be
considered.
.
"Obesity combined with diabetes is one of the greatest threats to humanity
today," said Dr Jones of ITV's Good Morning Britain.
.
"Half the population will be clinically obese by 2050, which is a
terrifying thought.
.
"One of the worrying aspects is that there is so much obesity that being
simply overweight is now considered normal."
.
At least 3.2 million people in the UK have been diagnosed with diabetes
and about 850,000 more may have the condition without knowing it.
.
The annual care bill for the NHS is 10billion but forecasters say diabetes
and obesity will create a 19billion funding gap in 10 years.
.
Dr Jones, an ambassador for online patients' forum diabetes.co.uk, added:
"We need more leisure centres and should consider having personal trainers
on the NHS to stop obesity before it starts.

"We have not done nearly enough in the preventative field.
.
"There is a clear need to make it easier for people to buy healthy fruit
and vegetables and to take more exercise.
