Ridgefields new library will glitter with technology, and hum with
automated electronic efficiency. But itll still be about books and
reading.

The physical collection is probably about 110,000 items now. The majority
of that is still books, said Mary Rindfleisch, assistant director of the
library. Theres a significant portion of the population, of all ages, that
likes to have a book in their hands.

And that is supplemented nowadays by a lot of digital content, she said.

Ridgefields new $20-million library will open in a week with a three-day
celebration from Friday, May 9, to Sunday, May 11.

And the technology will be whirring, beeping, buzzing.

Its all coming together, slowly but surely, said Anthony Cacciola, the
librarys network administrator.

Were going to have wide-screen monitors, new printers, wireless printing
wi-fi printing for the first time, he said. Were going to have a 3-D
printer in the technology center.

Overall, the new library has about 110 computers, with about 40 for direct
public use. The remainder will be for staff, or will serve as the hidden
brains of the buildings many technological systems from book cataloging
to climate control.

People are always asking about e-books, Ms. Rindfleisch said. We do
provide access for our cardholders to e-book services. But we consider
that a supplement to, not a replacement for, print books.

In the old days wed get 10 print copies of the new John Grisham. Today wed
maybe get eight print copies and two e-books, she said.
