On February 12, writer and columnist Damien G. Walter published a thesis on e-book sales that caused quite a stir in the publishing community.

.

Walter addressed several ugly industry realities, such as consumer impulse buying with low read rates, the principle of digital abundance, the glut of low-quality self-published books and physical scarcity. But heres what Walters post doesnt do: provide a solution for the e-book industry.

.

As a publishing activist and speaker, I agree that buying trends indicate the e-book industry is immature. After all, statistics show that more than 60 percent of readers still prefer print. But when 58 percent of Americans have a smartphone, 32 percent own an e-reader and 42 percent own a tablet, its clear that digital publishing is here to stay.

.

The digital revolution is great for readers and can be great for authors, but rock-bottom e-book prices have sent traditional publishers panicking. At the same time, the indie authors who are snapping up market share are fighting against a flood of poorly published books hitting online retailers.

.

If all three parties hope to survive the e-book boom, they must hold themselves to higher standards and adapt to stay relevant as the industry evolves.

If the e-book industry is to reach maturity, authors, publishers and online retailers need to work together to advance publishing and ensure readers can find good content. Higher standards will mean more reviews, more sales and most importantly, more content consumers.
