A shorter URL for the above link: . http://tinyurl.com/mwtamfw . .Theres a potted plant on the windowsill in the back of our office. Were not really sure what kind of plant it is (maybe an ivy?) but its quietly become a big part of the team.
.The plant was a parting gift from a former co-worker of ours named Jen. She brought the plant into the office a few years ago and served as its primary caregiver. When she got another job across town, she opted to leave the plant in the office as a memento. We decided to name it Jen in her honor, promising to care for it as if it was our own.
. Well never let you die, Jen. Youll always be with us! .But a funny thing happened a few months later. Jen (the plant) started looking a little grim. I suppose wed gotten a little negligent in our care. Wed forget to open the blinds on sunny days. Wed forget to remove the brown leaves from her vines. Wed forget to water her for, say, October.
.In short, we were guilty of doing the one thing we promised we wouldnt: We were slowly killing Jen. The sad thing is, the more Jen started to fade, the less we seemed to notice.
. snip .Following her visit, we decided it was time to bring Jen (the plant) back to life. We pulled open the blinds, plucked away her dead leaves, and began watering her on a regular basis. (Id even sneak her the occasional sip of Dasani). And little by little, we watched plant-Jen return from the brink. Shes now back to her green, flowy self, peering over our shoulder while we hammer out each issue.
