May is a splendid gardening month in Northern California. The weather is usually pleasant and sunny, flowers are blooming, and roses come into perfection. To keep flowering bushes in good shape, water early in the day, and blast aphids off with a strong spray of water. Prune rosebushes to open the plant to good air circulation, and pick up the diseased leaves. When cutting flowers to take inside, bring a bucket of water into the garden and plunge the cut stems immediately into the water. Before arranging flowers, remove all leaves that will be below the water line in the vase. Change the water whenever it looks dirty. And here is a nifty technique if roses start to wilt: recut them and plunge them in warm water for a few hours before putting them in a clean vase.

.

- Sow summer flower seeds such as coreopsis, cosmos, marigold and zinnia, which are all easy to grow from seed. Plant summer annuals from nursery-grown cell packs.

.

- Weed.

.

- Continue to pursue slugs and snails.

.

- If you applied fertilizer in April, wait four weeks before feeding again. If you have not fertilized, start now. An all-purpose fertilizer, high in nitrogen, can be applied to everything: lawns, landscape plants, established annuals and perennials.

.

- Azaleas, camellias and rhododendrons prefer acid-type fertilizer after blooming, and they can be mulched with used coffee grounds. Citrus need a citrus fertilizer with iron.

.

- In the vegetable garden, sow seeds of bush beans, carrots, chard, corn, cucumbers, melons, pumpkins, radishes and squash. Buy eggplant, pepper and tomato plants, which take months to mature to fruition.
