Soggy Lee Plods North; Tornado Watches Issued September 5, 2011 8:05 a.m. EDT CNN http://www.cnn.com/2011/US/09/05/tropical.weather.gulf/ . .New Orleans (CNN) -- Lee whipped up winds, dumped rain and caused severe flooding across a broad swath of the Southeast Monday even after weakening to a tropical depression.
.The storm will bring up to 20 inches of rain to some areas as it moves into southern Mississippi Monday, the National Hurricane Center said. Lee's winds have also fueled fierce wildfires that killed at least two people and threatened about 1,000 homes in Texas, officials said.
.Already at least 300 homes burned down and thousands of people evacuated in Bastrop County, authorities there said Sunday night. In east Texas, a mother and her 18-month-old child died when flames engulfed their mobile home near the town of Gladewater, the Gregg County Sheriff's Department said.
.The plodding storm had maximum sustained winds of 35 mph Monday morning. But while its winds died down, Lee remained a threat as it moved toward the Appalachians and areas to the east and north, with its intense rains potentially producing problems, especially in already saturated areas.
.By Sunday night, state and local officials in Louisiana had reported flooding in numerous parishes including Iberia, Terrebone, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Tammany and Jefferson.
.Crews in Crown Point, Louisiana, were scrambling Monday to create makeshift levees aimed at protecting homes from water that was creeping out of the Intracoastal Waterway.
New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu told reporters Sunday that the storm had dumped 10 to 13 inches of rain on the city and brought wind gusts of up to 50 mph.
