On many Monday afternoons at Four Oaks in Cedar Rapids, an agency specializing in treatment for children with a variety of behavioral and emotional problems, middle school students in the Asperger's program gather around a tablet computer to draw and compose music.

.

One begins a story with the drawing and passes the computer to the next child to continue the plot.

.

They laugh at the funny things their characters say, and they high-five when their story or song is completed.

.

It seems like a typical afternoon for middle school students, but for those with Asperger's, this social interaction is special.

.

"For many people, the ability to interact with one another is innate, but it's not simple for these kids. It's very complicated," said Monica Ryan-Rausch, a success manager at Four Oaks who helped develop the Asperger's program for middle and high school students.

.

Playing games and participating in activities with other students using tablet computers helps teach children to adapt to the behavior of others and compromise in certain situations, said Juan Pable Hourcade, an assistant professor in the Computer Science Department at the University of Iowa.

.

Hourcade and his students began developing tablet applications for children with autism spectrum disorders about four years ago, just before the iPad and tablet computer craze hit. The program now is being used at Four Oaks and at an after-school program for elementary school students at Hoover Elementary in Iowa City.

.

The software also is available for free download online, and Ryan-Rausch said several families from Four Oaks have purchased their own tablets for personal use.

Juan Pablo Hourcade is an Assistant Professor at the University of Iowa's Department of Computer Science. His main area of research is Human-Computer Interaction, with a concentration on the design, implementation and evaluation of technologies that support creativity, collaboration and information access for a variety of users, including children and older adults. Dr. Hourcade completed his graduate studies at the University of Maryland's Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory where he obtained his Ph.D. in Computer Science in 2003.

Dr. Hourcade is actively involved in the research community, serving as Deputy Subcommittee Chair for the CHI 2012 Conference, Associate Chair for the CHI 2010 and CHI 2011 Conferences, Papers Chair of the IDC 2004 Conference, Papers Co-Chair of the IDC 2005 Conference, and Workshops Chair in the IDC 2008 and 2011 Conferences. He is a member of the Editorial Board of Interacting with Computers. He is editor of the Universal Interactions column for interactions magazine. Open Autism Software
Where social skills and interest in computers meet
http://www.cs.uiowa.edu/~hourcade/projects/asd/

.

People diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) have impaired social interaction and communication, needing special instruction from parents and teachers. As more and more children are diagnosed, the need for effective interventions grows. Yet, when we searched for resources to aid in the development of social skills, much of what we found was expensive and copywritten.

.

To fill this gap, we propose a set of activities developed for software on a multitouch computer. Many with autism have a natural interest in computers, yet computers are usually used by one person at a time. The activities we designed for a multitouch tablet are social and involve face-to-face interactions. Because we want parents and teachers to be able to use this technology widely, we are making it free and open source. The software can be downloaded for free, and experienced programmers may modify the code we have posted online. In addition, the software runs on commoditized, commercially available hardware.
