The monster is alive. Still waiting for the Asus GE-Force 6800 512, but I am testing OS's now. I had to scrap the SATA DVD for good. Thanks to the crappy Tyan BIOS (I doubt that it is this bad on "normal" motherboards,) it simply cannot boot from an array while set to boot from DVD, whether there is anything in it or not. So, I will have to live with that ugly flat cable.

The storage ended up OK. I put a second 3Ware mirror controller in with a pair of 250GB drives, this will be /home on the final (no doubt Ubuntu) installation.

Suse 10.1 x64
Installed with no problem, detected everything, but it's a long process. They are also on the "install from a live-CD boot" bandwagon, just like Ubuntu. I can't argue with it, how else are you going to detect hardware properly? Boot time is slow, but once it gets going it flies pretty well. I would say that overall, it seems about as fast as XP on a current "average" new machine (3 to 4 GHz processor.)

It comes with java and acroreader already installed. Nice. But no mp3 support. Package management is cumbersome at best. Separate programs for installing, and uninstalling software, and neither lets you actually see what is presently installed. There is a "critical updates" mechanism, but it is also a long process to configure, and requires registration, when it was all done it still errored out when I tried to update the 126 packages it said I needed.

Altogether, it reminds me of RedHat. They have their own terminology for everything, and of course lots of hooks into Netware, as well as a built-in virtual machine. It works by replacing the kernel with a VM one. I tried to set it up but didn't get through it. I also got the impression that the VM must be another copy of Suse.

The question is, do we need another RedHat?
