If all or several of them can't be read then the drive is defective and would need to be replaced. If it's just one disc that is having the problem then clean the disc as Dean suggested and gently dry it off thoroughly with a soft cloth (microfiber if you have one), then try it again. If it still doesn't work but other discs work fine then the disc may be damaged. Also, you said the drive doesn't make the usual whirring noise. Does it just eject the disc shortly after you insert it?
