If you really have to manually uninstall files, you may have some chance if your installer created an "installer log file". I've copied my recent Office update installer log and pasted it below [after the asterisks] if you want to examine its structure. This one might seem long, but in fact compared to the Quark Xpress install log, this one is quite short. I think the Quark log is at least 10 pages long. The logs can be useful if you want to know what files have been installed and which ones have been turfed. The record also contains the path to each file installed, which means that if you have a printout, you could (Whether you would want to or not is another thing!) follow each path and eliminate the files one by one. (At least you'd appreciate the speed and comfort of using an installer in the first place!) In the install record below, the first three lines give administrative details of the install, such as: Date of the install; The start time; The installed file reference (e.g. AUOffice2004111EN -- which I interpret as Apple Update Office 2004, Day?? or Record?? 111, English); A record of the type of install (in this case "Easy Install"). The very last two lines of the record show the end time of the installation and identify that the installation completed normally. The in-between lines are strictly installation items. Each line begins with one of the keywords or expressions: "Updated, "Installed", or "Created the folder". The details after the keywords represent the file pathway the installer followed to perform one of its functions: Either to install a new file or folder; Remove an old file; or Identify the activity actually performed. So, it would seem that if the installer log is a consistent and accurate record of what has been installed, then a relatively straight forward general purpose uninstaller could probably be written to read the installer log and remove the files. [How's your Applescript or Perl scripting, Eric?] Of course this would only work for programs using an installer and creating an installer log. It would also require that you retain installer logs for original installs and any updates installed. [We wouldn't throw them away, now, would we? :-) ] Any programs that would be installed by dragging onto your drive, could, presumably just be dragged to the trash, to uninstall.
