I just want to add to this autorecover conversation that, in my experience, it is more reliable when the computer completely crashes than it is when you just end task on the program. When I worked helpdesk and people would call in a panic and say "Word is locked up and I don't want to hit ctrl+alt+del becuz I will lose all the work I haven't saved", we would often tell them, "Well, this is a gamble, but since you are going to lose everything anyway, let's try it." Then we would tell them to just hit the power button on the front of their machine....and 8 times out of 10, autorecover DID work when they did this. But, it RARELY works when you just use ctrl+alt+del to end task. I know hitting the power button isn't the best thing to do, but, in this case, it's better than losing everything. Most of these people thought we were geniuses when we did this. LOL Biggest problem I'm having with Windows XP is the Office programs don't generally lock up on me...but instead, I get that damn generic Windows XP screen that says "Word has encountered a problem and will shut down" and I DO lose everything!! Grrrrrr (wonder if I hit the power button, what would happen? *snicker*) Linda Publisher ~ ABC ~ All 'Bout Computers Owner ~ Linda's Computer Stop http://personal-computer-tutor.com FREE MS Office eBook Tutorial http://personal-computer-tutor.com/library.htm -----Original Message----- From: mso-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:mso-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Dian Chapman Sent: Wednesday, November 06, 2002 11:08 PM To: mso@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [mso] Re: auto recover Sometimes when it freezes and gets a three-finger salute, it doesn't always recover. Particularly on 2000...2002 is better. BTW...if your screen is freezing, there's a good chance that your video driver needs to be updated. Try going to ControlPanel/System and check the Performance dialog. There you'll find a button for Graphics (on 9x) systems. Click it and click the Slide down two clicks for Hardware Accelerator. That helps reduce some of the pull on the video and usually helps. The other reason it can freeze, if it's not the video, is that an addin is causing a problem on opening or closing. But if you weren't opening/closing when it errored out...then shoot for the video test.
