You have Overtype turned on. Go to Tools>Options and click on the Edit tab
and uncheck "overtype mode"

Hi, group - Recently, when I am composing a WORD document and I want to
add, correct, or delete a character or a phrase, something strange is
happening. The item I want to change does respond when I hit "backspace",
but the next character in the line deletes itself when I type the
correction, or even when I add a needed space. Why, do you suppose, is this
suddenly happening; how do I fix it? Thanks again for your good help!
