Robert,

Look at the article I sent you to last time. That shows how to find the
last one (although in my example, it's spaces. Just to remind you, it's
here:

I am beginning to read the names of files on my CDs into a master list.
If C2 contains:

E:\animap\overlays\Coovlayr.BMP

Will the procedure you described locate the last slash "\" and separate
them
into:
C2:
E:\animap\overlays\

D2
Coovlayr.BMP

?

Thank you.

Based on your mention of splitting the column into two first, I can tell
you how to do that manually.

Add a new empty column to the right of the one with last name, first
name in it Highlight the column with the last name, first name in it and
go to the Data menu and choose "Text to columns" Choose the comma as
your delimiter and it will put the last name in one column and the first
name in the new column Then add a third column and put this formula in
it: =B1&" "&A1

Assuming your first name is in B1 and your last name is in A1

This will give you firstname space lastname
Then just drag that formula down the column and delete or hide the other
two columns.

I use a commercial add-in to do this - kinda, sorta anyhow! The add-in
will put the names into two separate columns, allowing you to then
simply switch the column around. Then, I avoid all future headaches by
always listing the names in separate columns - except when someone else
gives it to me that way already!

The add-in is at

inan
ce/Spreadsheets/Name-Splitter-for-Microsoft-Excel.htm - it is a
time-limited shareware I believe.
