If any of you have WISHED that you could mess around with Office 2007, but you don't want to take the chance of installing a beta on your only system...Microsoft now has a very cool way of allowing you to play around with it without having to download the program nor install it on your own system. You can take a test drive...by running your own version of it through your browser. Microsoft has setup a server, using Citrix (software that allow remote desktops to appear for your use). So you can go to the MS site, run the setup for your browser (that only installs the Citrix client plug-in into your browser) and then register and you can run Office 2007 through your browser whenever you want to mess around with the Office 2007 applications. NOTE...you should have either time and a spirit of adventure<g> or a *little* web technical experience to set this up. And you'll also want to have a good Internet connection (broadband) or it'll take forever to set this up. Realize you're having visuals and commands sent back/forth from a remote server...so dial up would be a nightmare! If you want to give it a shot...read on... * Go to the new Microsoft Office home page: http://office.microsoft.com * Just down the page to the right of the main image, notice the link for "Try the new Office...Free online test-drive" * Click that link * That takes you to an info page, click the button a little down the page to start the test drive process. The first time takes a little longer because you'll need to install the plug-in and also register. After that, it goes much faster on future returns. * You'll go through a few steps to check your system and you'll have to allow/install the plug in. * Then you need either a Passport to login or click the other option to register for a Windows Live ID. The first time they will also ask you a few questions about how you may plan to use Office. * Once finished with the one-time registration, you'll click to start the test drive. * Depending on your connection, it'll take a few seconds/minutes for the Citrix desktop to be accessed. NOTE: There ARE a few bugs in the scripting. So, if you're asked for any passwords or to verify user names if trying Outlook...just click CANCEL or close the message box and the process will continue. I've been through this several times now and I do get the occasional script error. Just close and ignore them...that's on their server side and it'll still get rolling without that info. * Eventually, you'll see the desktop with a listing of all the applications. Just click on the program you want to try. It'll open, usually with a sample page and the help/tutorial panel will open, which you can close if you don't want to bother going through training. You can also max out the application by doing the same as you would on your own desktop...click the maximize button or simply double click on the top title bar. Then type, save, reopen, edit...as if you were working from your own computer...or more realistically, if you were working on a remote desktop. It's not super fast...especially during the day. I have noticed it runs faster late at night when fewer people are trying it. But if you have the time, the desire to check it out and the bandwidth to give it a shot...it's pretty cool to try it that way and this is a neat technology that allows you to run your own desktop from remote servers.
