Excellent story and terrible experience!! That one was akin to the old saw about sending IT an email to tell them the email server is down...only more frustrating, I'm sure. There was one thing I caught in your message, though, which I thought ought to receive a little more attention, especially for Outlook and OE users: Anti-virus software is completely reactive and, to date, can only reliably protect you against known (or, thought of another way, historical) attacks. The heuristics engines in use are at about the same level of maturity as these anti-spam tools. Thus, they are largely unreliable, complex and not likely to protect you from the latest exploit. And, as you can see from today's viral messaging making its rounds, AV software has been unable to stop the incident from ever starting. Today's sufferers are users who didn't patch their Internet Explorer 2 years ago and probably had very little interaction with the virus before launching it from their systems. The best protection is personal diligence on the points of personal behavior, patching discipline AND anti-virus. Thanks for sharing the soap box!
