Robert,

The dark "L"s are Tab stops.  They are normal, I think.  This is how the TOC
lines up the items of text.  They also control the dotted lines ('leaders').
Have a look at Format, Tabs and you will see them listed in order of their
position on the ruler (in inches or centimetres, depending on your
settings).  Select the entire TOC and move one of these little L's left or
right along the ruler and you will see how they control the position of the
elements of your TOC.

At the left of the ruler you will see another of these dark L's on its own.
You can click on this to cycle through the type of tab - Left, Right,
Centre, Decimal &c. You can then click on the ruler somewhere to insert a
new tab.  Be ready to Undo, however, since your TOC will probably seriously
distort!

To add [NAME] to your list and have them line up would require a new,
right-aligned tab stop for all the lines before the page number and a single
tab character before the [NAME] item.
