James-

I must be nuts. When I do what you say, mine sticks for the rest of the
session. When I save, close, and open later, it reverts back to the
earlier settings. I have noticed something I had not noticed before;
that is some characters that look at dark "L"s (and reverse "L"s) on the
margin bar. I count 11 of them. Are they normal or the result of my
futile attempts to format the table of contents?

Thank you.

Robert

Robert,

What I did was highlight my entire TOC and click File, Page Setup.
Adjust
your margins here and select Apply to: Selected Text. It seems to stay
just
fine for me.

In my table of contents, currently -about- 5 1/2 inches wide, sometimes
has a title that pushes the page number down to the next line.

I seem to have two choices:
1. Manually reset the table of contents font to size 9, or,
2. Manually "pull" the right side rightwards by 1 1/4 inches.

I prefer the second option. Whenever I do a "Update Field" >> "Update
Table" it goes back to the original setting. Is it possible to tell Word
I want the right-side edge moved rightwards by 1 1/4 inches and it
sticks to that?

Thank you.

Robert
