Hi Carolyn...sorry to tell you that there is no "easy" way to create a Table
of Contents without Styles...and I'm not going to "bash" you for not wanting
to use styles (and hopefully Dian won't either LOL)...however, I can assure
you if you want to use Word as it was intended to be used, you really need
to get used to using Styles...not only becuz it makes lots of things easier
in Word...but also becuz it will prevent many problems with documents down
the road....especially with them "big books" you describe.

Styles and Table of Contents are ONLY a pain in the butt, when you have a
large document that was created without using Styles in the first
place...then, yes it is a very time-consuming process to go thru the entire
document and add the correct Heading Styles to all the entries you want Word
to put into the TOC...but if you get used to using Styles and use them right
from the get-go when you initially create the document, then the TOC surely
is "brilliant" and quick.

Here's a very brief little intro to Tables of Contents and Styles that I
wrote for The Newbie Club...it's really not that difficult:

So...the short answer is, "Sorry..without Styles, there is no 'easy' way to
do Tables of Contents."

Now to answer Anne's original question...unfortunately the answer is "no" in
Publisher...I even checked Publisher 2003 and there doesn't seem to be a way
to automate TOCs in there yet...all the help documentation discusses how to
do it manually :-(

Dear Anne R. and all: Can't help but to butt in here. I don't know a thing
about Publisher, but I must question your comment that the Table of Contents
feature in Word is "brilliant." Please explain!
