Diane,

To change this behavior is easy and you don't have to close and re-open the
document.

In between the navigation arrows on the below the vertical scroll bar is a
button with what looks like a ball.  When you point to it with your mouse
the tooltip says it is "Select Browse Object".  It is used to change how the
navigation arrows can be used.  Here's how to use it:

Point to the Select Browse Object button and click your mouse.  You will see
a pop up appear that has 12 options available for browsing the document.
When you point to each there will be an explanation of what each option is.
Just click on the desired browse option.  To go back to the p[age option you
would click on the top row, far right button that says "Browse by Page".
