Man, I love this list!  I know I don't say much, but I read most

The reason for the file bloat is the way you are saving the file.
PowerPoint 95 did not do very good file compression, so file sizes were
much larger.  After 95, the file compression was greatly improved and is
what we are used to today.

If your friend is using Office 97, you do not need to back save.  All
versions of PowerPoint from 97 on use the same file format.  They can
read each other's files, but newer features are not supported on earlier
versions.
