I use the following site to identify the programs that are started and which
ones are not needed.
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_search.php

With the knowledge of the above site then I just run msconfig and uncheck the
programs in the Startup tab that I don't want to start up on boot.

 Hi James,
 try StartUp Inspector (http://www.windowsstartup.com/).
 CCleaner (http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner) also
has an option, under Tools->Startup to mamage startup
 programs.
 Both are good programs.
I use Soluto (www.soluto.com) which gives me the option of
delaying startup of specific programs that aren't needed
right after boot but which I don't want to stop from
 loading.
