[mso] Re: Non-breaking spaces

OK...the main reason is to keep works together you don't want to break
goofy, like a name. If I was writing Dian D. Chapman, I would put a hard
space (non breaking) between Dian and D. This way if my name gets broken
to a second line in a paragraph...it will be like this...

Dian D.
Chapman

And not like this...

Dian
D. Chapman

The second one being a big typographical/design no-no and the sure sign
of an amateur!

Another cool thing is that it allow you to quickly align stuff across a
page. Say you're writing a resume and want it to say

My Company                          Chicago, IL

With the company info on the left and city info on the right.

You can do this many ways, a borderless table, right alignment tabs...or
my quickie favorite...

Type My Company with a hard space between My and Company. Then a regular
space between Company and Chicago. Then a hard space between Chicago and
IL.

Now, if you use a soft break to continue the line by hitting Ctrl/Enter
after IL, you can go back up and hit Ctrl/J to justify the above line.
This will cause Word to think the line above is still part of the
continuing paragraph...versus the end if you hit a hard return...and
it'll hold the hard space words together...but stretch the regular space
across the page to align everything fully justified.

To see it work, do this...

* hit Ctrl/J to justify a line
* type My
* type hard space (ctrl/shift/space)
* type Company
* type soft (regular) space
* type Chicago
* hit Ctrl/Enter...you will now see that the Word Chicago shoots to the
end of the line!

As a former designer in Word, I would have gone NUTS if I didn't have my
hard space and soft return to pull off tricks (which I still use all the
time and even teach in my classes...so consider this free lesson a
holiday gift!<g>)

Ok, first, sorry I didn't read that first - sometimes I don't
"listen" so well.

Now I know what it's called, but I want to know why. There may be
no useful purpose in knowing, but what is the difference between a
non-breaking space and the space you get when you hit the space bar
and the symbol shows up as a tiny solid dot between the words?

Thanks again,

Jan
