[mso] Need help: Parent with Works 7.0 is having problems installing Excel 2003

Can anyone help? My dad bought a new computer earlier this year. It came
pre-installed with Works 7.0. He requested a copy of Excel for Father's Day,
so I ordered and sent him a stand alone copy of Excel 2003.

He installed Excel yesterday. It installs fine, but when he opens Excel it
asks for the product key. He enters the product key and it tells him that
the key is invalid.

I did some research and found KB article 836178 which talks about the same
problem, only with Office 2003 after another installation of Office 2003. My
first question is: Does anyone know if this KB article applies to more than
just that situation?

(FYI: I really don't understand this fix. In all my years of playing with
Office, I was always told to install oldest to newest and the KB article
seems to disagree with that.)

Next question: Has anyone else run up against the same error on a system
with Excel 2003 and Works 7.0? If so, how did you fix it?

Finally, the KB article says the solution is to un-install the previously
installed version and re-install the new version of Office. His machine is
an OEM machine and it appears that he doesn't have the CDs to re-install
Works. If I get him Works from the Company Store and send it, will he be
able to get around the problem by un-installing his version, installing
Excel and then installing the new copy of Works?

Any help is appreciated!
