Kay,
If you are having problems opening earlier version files in Office 2003, it
is probably due to a known and fixed problem. Have you installed ALL the
Office updates on your system? Usually these fix the file open problems.

I do not know about doing both
I just got 2003 on a new machine and the learning curve has been hard
And it would not import any of my files from 2000 on other system
