This is interesting. I guess my point was that the one time there was a virus embedded within an email, my virus scan prevented it from launching. I did not do anything extraordinary to launch it myself, outside of clicking on it to view in the preview pane. This would seem to behave in the same manner as you described OE's behavior. I have no idea what virus it was or how it was activated as I immediately got rid of it. Would not the same thing happen in OE, regardless of how it is embedded? Using plain text eliminates the entire problem, and on most newsgroups that is what I use to avoid those predicaments. Do not think for one moment that I am advising against safe computing practices. I only notice that using the preview pane has never caused me a problem. I wonder if it has for anyone else on this list. I would be interested in knowing what happened. I am using Outlook 2K. Denise My impression is (Maybe Dian or Linda can correct me if I'm wrong) and that is, The preview pane in Outlook handles things a bit different than Outlook Express because in OE, if you have it set up where you can view things like Jpegs and what have you in the preview pane without doubleclicking or hitting the spacebar, I think in that case, stuff will run or be shown without any intervention from you, thus that could be dangerous as far as malicious sripts and so forth. -> The common advice is not to use the preview pane. However, I always use -> the preview pane and I have never gotten a virus. Only once was a virus -> able to activate on the preview pane and my virus scan caught it so no -> damage done. I imagine opening the mail would've done the same thing, so -> I don't see the benefit, unless you are sure to save and scan your -> messages before opening which would be a real pain. I get thousands of -> mail every day and some from rather novice groups. That is where the -> majority of viruses will come in from. -> -> On the other hand, I always keep my virus scan updated, and I suspect -> that my ISP filters out some of the viruses. So if you are not careful -> about safe computing, then you might want to disable anything that could -> catch you unawares. -> -> When you turn off the preview pane in a folder, the next time it opens -> the preview pane will be off. So once you set it, it will stick. -> -> Denise -> -> Warning: Dates in Calendar are closer than they appear. ************************************************************* You are receiving this mail because you subscribed to mso@xxxxxxxxxxxxx or MicrosoftOffice@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx To send mail to the group, simply address it to mso@xxxxxxxxxxxxx To Unsubscribe from this group, send an email to mso-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx?Subject=unsubscribe Or, visit the group's homepage and use the dropdown menu.
