[mso] Re: How do I handle Outlook2000 email pre-view panes

The common advice is not to use the preview pane. However, I always use
the preview pane and I have never gotten a virus. Only once was a virus
able to activate on the preview pane and my virus scan caught it so no
damage done. I imagine opening the mail would've done the same thing, so
I don't see the benefit, unless you are sure to save and scan your
messages before opening which would be a real pain. I get thousands of
mail every day and some from rather novice groups. That is where the
majority of viruses will come in from.

On the other hand, I always keep my virus scan updated, and I suspect
that my ISP filters out some of the viruses. So if you are not careful
about safe computing, then you might want to disable anything that could
catch you unawares.

When you turn off the preview pane in a folder, the next time it opens
the preview pane will be off. So once you set it, it will stick.

I just upgraded from Win95 and Outlook98 to Win2000 and the Outlook that
is
in Office 2000. Most things operate in a familiar way. Some don't.

I have noticed that when processing mail from some subfolders in my
inbox, a
preview pane shows. I have heard that this is insecure. On the VIEW menu
I
can select and toggle preview pane and auto preview. What I have been
doing
is turning off (via the VIEW menu) preview pane whenever it shows up. I
always have auto-preview turned off. Am I safe, or am I already
compromised
when the preview pane shows up? If I am compromised by the preview pane,
how
do I ensure that it is always off?

TIA Jim Chapman
