This should do it:
Go to menu Insert Field Page 123
Then ALT F9 to show code and add in: " \# 000#" (no quotes but soft spaces
where you see gaps) which gives you below:
{ PAGE \ \# 000# *Arabic * MERGEFORMAT }
which produces: 0001 0002 0003
It should do the trick.

Is it possible to format page numbers in Word 2000 so instead of pages
printing 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc, they will print four digits padded with zeroes?
I.e., 0001, 0002. 0003, 0004, 0005, and so on?
