This sounds interesting. Can I set the current donor number field to do
this with all the new donors I add but leave the current donor numbers
alone? If so can someone walk me through it as if I'm someone who still
depends on a "for Dummies" book to program a database? Concatenate
still sounds like a dirty word to me.

Hi. When I want an auto number, I use a combination of a couple of
things to ensure I get a unique number and that the numbers are all in
the same format.
For example, I might use a one-up number(3char)from the table, the first
contact code(3char)and the date of first contact(6char), like this using
concatenate, left(), mid(), right() and the date:

Found something that may help. To reset the autonumber with the records
in them delete the autonumber field and add it back. Also, be sure to
compact

You rock! Ugly bad form no longer corrupting things. You'd think that
as I was tooling around looking for what would do it tools--startup
would have jumped out. Oh well. Thanks!
By the way, I had changed the name of the the bad form to frmbadmain,
then realized that that was a HUGE mistake. I got scared it would
never open again.
Now on my list--make my own darn forms and put together some rockin
reports to knock my board members socks off. Also important and still
needing a white horse: help me fix my autonumber problem so that when I
get new donors I don't have to guess at an unused primary key number.
BTW today's thank you note was similarly easy--all lined up for me
already!
Folks pay thousands of dollars for off the shelf fundraising programs.
(and they spend lots of time figuring out how to use them too!) We
can't afford that, but we also can't afford not to treat our donors
well. Thanks so much those of you who have encouraged on and off list.
