Glenda,

Here's the formula you need in your query:

        NumAsText: CStr(Format([Number],"0.000"))

Replace [Number] with the name of your numeric field. This will work as
a Select query, or as an Append or MakeTable if you prefer.

The 'Format' function forces the three decimal places, and then the
'CStr' function converts the result into a string.

Don't you love Access?

Thanks Ray but the format picture doesn't work, with quotes or without.
The field the query is based on is Double, 3 decimal. It displays
correctly. The field in the query is formatted as fixed number, 3
decimal. It displays correctly. If I cut/paste to the text table, I
lose the trailing zeros. If I append to the text table, I lose the
trailing zeros. The way I've been correcting this so far is to export
the query to Excel. Fix the trailing zero thing then copy/paste this
result to the text table. As my file grows larger, by thousands every
week, I have to do the cut/paste thing in batches of about 5,000 records
at a time. I'm seriously wanting to not have to do this step and go
straight from the query to the text table. any other thoughts?

Glenda,

It's our old friend the Zero Placeholder again. Try the format picture:
"0.0000"
