I acquired an 1855 Colt revolving rifle that had been kept in a smokehouse. Salt had rusted deeply into it in places, but the polished mainspring had only a tiny dot or two of oxide on it. Had to use a torch to build up some of the more deeply pitted parts of the rifle, even had to make a full fluted cylinder and yet, there was that mainspring glittering away.
