No, Jesse, it is not Stainless Steel. It is good old
 fashioned high Carbon Solingen Steel.

Al,

Give it a high polish and it will be almost as rust resistant as stainless.
I acquired an 1855 Colt revolving rifle that had been kept in a smokehouse.
Salt had rusted deeply into it in places, but the polished mainspring had
only a tiny dot or two of oxide on it. Had to use a torch to build up some
of the more deeply pitted parts of the rifle, even had to make a full fluted
cylinder and yet, there was that mainspring glittering away.
