I got my XF6 today.

Besides the color, and slightly different textured finish, it is physically
identical to an XS, as far as I can tell. Of course, the access panel on the
bottom is a little different, etc.

The new sounds are pretty good. The good thing about them is that they're
sounds that the XS didn't have. The XS clavs weren't that good. The new clavs
have multiple layers, and cycle through different samples for the same layer.
That makes them sound less sample-like. The XS had exactly one accordian
program, and it was bad. The new accordians are the neatest ones that I've
heard on a synth, and use the AF buttons a little like the switches on a real
accordian. The XS's combo organs were very weak, mainly synthesizing them out
of basic waveforms. The xF now has real combo organ samples. There are new
trumpets (with shakes and other effects), new saxes that sound awesome,
additional strings (several articulations), several ethnic instruments, a new
mega voice electric guitar, some new electric basses, new acoustic and
electronic drums, and, of course, the new S6 piano. There aren't a lot of new
sounds, but the ones that are new are pretty good ones. Yamaha is also
supposedly putting out a free 400MB expansion in a week or so. If you just want
presets, then that bank will fill up the remaining 3 user banks, giving you a
total of 1664 presets and over a gig of total samples. Pretty good stuf.

I have heard a few of the new arps, but seriously won't be digging in that deep
for a while.

I've only messed around with it a bit, but, for the most part, the layout of
all of the screens seems to be the same as the XS. The file mode is a little
different. Will need to get my reader to look at that.

Nice board.

Bryan
