Yes, that works.
 
Also, you can play around with song and pattern mode, and adjust the mix
there.

So I guess one of the solutions for now is to create a sequence in
Sonar, then use the mix editor?

        The mix editor does not create songs.
         
        A Mix includes all of the settings that are involved in mixing
the sounds that you hear. A song has a mix. A pattern has a mix. A
performance has most of the mixing settings, even though there isn't any
such thing as a mix in Performance mode. A mix does not include notes,
samples, etc.
         
        In song or pattern mode, you have tracks where notes are
recorded. The mix controls what instrument sound is played by the notes
on each track, how the sound is equalized, any system and master effects
that are applied, etc.
