the *Lakshadweep islands.*

We are currently developing community-based fisheries monitoring tools for
Lakshadweep, focusing our efforts in the islands of Agatti, Kadmat,
Kavaratti and Minicoy. Assistance is particularly needed with the
community-based catch monitoring programme; hence, *fluency in Malayalam is
a necessity *for all applicants. Primary work involves assisting Dakshin
researchers in the Lakshadweep Islands with fisher interviews, data
retrieval, entry and analysis, but may also extend to observer-based
research onboard fishing vessels. The position is targeted at
those interested in working on livelihood and conservation related issues,
and will help build field-based experience.

*Minimum requirements:* Indian citizenship, *Fluency in speaking, reading
and writing Malayalam*, Bachelors degree, Interest in socio-ecological
systems.

*Tentative start date: 10th January 2015.*

*Duration & Location: *3-5 months and involves considerable travel within
the Lakshadweep Islands. The volunteer post can be designed as an
internship or masters research project, and has the potential of evolving
into a paid position.

*Expenses and remuneration:* Although this is an unpaid volunteer position,
Dakshin Foundation shall cover all travel to the islands from Bangalore /
Kochi, research expenses in the field, plus all boarding and lodging in the
field.
