I’m not sure if this is precisely a solution, but what eventually seems to have
worked is sliding a finger along the track pad. I do not have Track Pad
Commander turned on, so didn’t think to use it. However, when I slid a finger
slightly along the track pad, the battery setting changed, and stuck. Same
thing with the “power adapter,” setting, the other entry in that table. I have
no idea why this works, except that possibly keyboard changes just don’t take,
in that particular pane. *shrug* It’s seemingly fixed now.

Hi Mark,
I thought that perhaps you had already tried my suggestion, but sent it just
in case.
Good luck finding a solution.

Hi, Russell.
Thanks for the suggestion; unfortunately, I’ve already tried that, and every
other combination of VO arrows, interacting, plain arrows, clicking, enter
key... the minute I exit the table, even if I’m still in System Prefs, the
setting reverts to its default. Nothing I seem to do will save the change.

Hi Mark,
When you interact with the slider, VO right arrow to the setting you want,
and then stop interacting at that point. This works for me in the Energy
Saver settings on my iMac. Hope it works for you as well.
Take care,
Russell

I’m using a MacBook Air 2019 with the latest Big Sur OS. When I open
System Preferences and choose “battery,” I am unable to change the “Turn
displays off after,” slider. This ostensibly means my laptop goes to
sleep, requiring password to enable, in two minutes. While the slider
appears to change when I interact with it and use VO arrows, when I close
and re-open System Preferences, and return to the Battery tab, the value
is once again set at 3.2%, two minutes. The same thing happens in the
“power adapter,” section. I cannot find an “Apply,” button or anything
else that will make these changes stick. Anyone know what I’m doing wrong?
My wife is using my laptop with VO off, and I keep having to run in there
every two minutes to wake it up because the screen goes to sleep!
Thanks.
