It might be a problem of where they update from or how they deal with problems. I had one problem with the 10.64 update but I corrected it. I can only tell you that I update only from the update menu and don't routinely repair permissions unless a problem exists. I am also aware that moor then in the Windows os, the Apple OS with VO depends on Java and Java scripting to work properly, so I don't understand anybody telling folks to disable Java scripting.
