I think that in DOM navigation mode, VoiceOver should completely ignore span.

In the case of div in DOM mode, VoiceOver should show VoiceOver the line break, unless the div is styled as an inline element, in which case it should be equivalent to a span and thus be ignored completely by VoiceOver.

Group navigation mode is supposed to mimic more of what a sighted person sees, so the CSS is used and Voicever tries to show position information. In this mode, I'm not sure how to approach this.

Certainly for me, I do all of my browsing in DOM mode, so in my opinion, this is where we must optomize and attempt to provide the most compelling experience for users. I see group navigation mode to be most useful for those developing pages using VoiceOver, so they can get an idea of how the document looks on-screen.

Just my two cents.

Subject: [macvoiceover] Kerning type with CSS

Another of my pages on web design for the sighted and the blind. This time I look at the very visual skill of kerning type and how to do it with CSS so that it work with screen readers. You will note there are issue with screen readers and some forms of kerning using <span> tags. We need a way to have VoiceOver ignore span tags and read the whole word.
