Regardless of what view you use in finder, you can vo-space (or if you have numpad commander turned on, and you have a key mapped to perform default action, you can just hit that key) and your folder/ application/file will open up and do the default action. I.E. open a folder, load the application, or launch text edit and load the file into it for viewing. You need not press command-o for this functionality. You can of course if you wish, but if removing your hands from the keyboard to get at the command key is too cumbersome, just use vo-space or the numpad commander, and you're all set.
