RedSn0w works fine. Just stear clear of those other companies that
claim to sell a jailbreak software, especially if the jb community is
saying that it cannot be done. There are lots of scams out there.

I believe that the computer at least has to have RedSn0w on it in
order to put a tethered device in the jb state, but I'm not sure,
because I've never gone for a tethered jailbreak. As per the frequency
with which you would need to restart the phone, I would say it depends
on the version of i os. Sometimes it can be pretty unstable as was the
case with 5.0.1.

And to add to Sarah's comment or maybe just to clarify it so I
understand, when you want to un jb your device, you just restore it.
But if you for some reason want to keep it on the current
jailbreakable version without updating to the latest that iTunes is
using, then you should download the i os firmware version and restore
through iTunes by doing I believe a control click over the restore
button, which lets you select the firmware that you want to put on
your phone. I find that I have to turn VO off when I do the ctrl
click. I don't know how it is in Windows.
