Thanks Dave I did this and it worked.  Do you know why this problem could
have happened? I'm new and learning so want to be able to figure things out
when I get in trouble.

press command-option-escape, this will bring up the force quite dialog, tab
to the force quit button and hit space, tab to the next force quite button
and hit space, relaunch mail and see what happens.

it sounds like you are using mail's default view.  I do not use this view
but you might try vo-shift-up arrow to get out of the mess.  Someone can
further advise you on what to do next unless you want to use classic view
which is a lot like using outlook express.
