Scott and all,
AppleVis was simply requesting that people link directly to pages where
podcasts reside rather than moving files to other locations and distributing
them that way. Nobody felt that the person who did this had anything malicious
in mind, and the content in question was taken down. AppleVis is far from the
only organization who requests that people link to content from their Website
rather than moving it elsewhere. I'm pretty certain that the developers of NVDA
would prefer that people not share the latest version of the screen reader via
Dropbox, even though it is free.
Again, nobody is angry with anyone here. A simple request was made, and
promptly complied with.
In full disclosure, I am a member of the AppleVis editorial team. I will not
respond to this thread any further on this list, but will welcome any private
correspondence. Please send private emails to
jamiepauls@xxxxxxxxx. Thanks.

John, this is completely bogus.
I know you can’t say it but I will. This is Apple Vis trying to remain
relevant after upsetting it’s audience on several occasions. Matt didn’t
modify the content, didn’t represent it as his own. As far as I’m
concerned Apple VIS can go pound sand. I know you’re in the accessibility
space though and have to play nice, they can be happy I didn’t receive an
email like that. I’d have posted it to several lists and called them out
publicly. Copy right violation is one thing, it’s wrong it’s
unacceptable in any form and it should be dealt with swiftly, this wasn’t
copy right violation. Probably the only thing Matt should have done in
addition is put a flat file or some remarks that the podcasts were produced
and copy righted Apple Vis, sort of an academic reference type link. I can
see wanting to stick to hyperlinking so the chain of custody is preserved but
come on. There’s violations and then there’s violations this is just not.
P.S. My comments are my own, I’m not try ing to put words in John’s or
anyone else mouth. I find this unsettling personally and that’s the
beginning and end of it.

No no. To their website is fine. Again, I am only posting in response to an
email I received from them. The “problem†was that a Dropboxlink to a
zip file containing several podcasts was offered and has been taken down.
The concern was that the material could be misused or distributed in a
manner not permissible by the copyright holders. It is a fine line, and
though I understand Matt’s point, as someone who also produces copyrighted
material, I am aware of the dangers of that kind of thing being potentially
problematic.

Am I misunderstanding or are you saying that links to their material may
not be posted here?

Hi everyone,
I just received a private message from one of the people who runs the
www.applevis.com
site and they brought to my attention that copyrighted material owned by
them was offered publicly by a member of this list. I consider the folks
at Applevis to be friends, and I know a few of the people involved
personally. I missed the initial post on this topic, and I understand that
this matter has been dealt with privately.
Nevertheless, as for future reference, please refrain from making material
that is copyrighted available to the public by way of this list. As I have
often said, I have a very easy policy about allowing people to post links
to various material and advertising their services or products. However,
let us not do this with other people’s material that you do not have
permission to make available to the public in the future. I’m not
yelling at anyone here or the like, as, again, this has been dealt with
off list, but this is being posted as just a friendly reminder to the list
for future reference.
