install the terminal app unrar, which apparently makes rar files. I just

tar -vzfc /directory_to_compress directory_to_compress.tar.gz
The tar.gz could have any name actually.
Then to unrap it,
tar -xvf directory_to_compress.tar.gz
It is free and it is already installed.
