OK Sarah, that's excellent. Can you provide me a link whereby I can get a trial and then buy it, if I like it? Is it in the app store?

Chris.

I would recomend SArchiver. I go over it on my youtube demo. It is a 20 or so dollar app but it is well wirth it.

Take care.

Hi there

I have an application called unrar installed on my mac that opens rar files. I just looked through the menus though, and it does not apparently make them. If you have the developer tools package and macports on your computer, you could install the terminal app unrar, which apparently makes rar files. I just figured out yesterday that you can make .tar.gz files on the mac using terminal

tar -vzfc /directory_to_compress directory_to_compress.tar.gz

The tar.gz could have any name actually.

Then to unrap it,

tar -xvf directory_to_compress.tar.gz

It is free and it is already installed.

I'm not sure. There probably is, but I've never needed to use anything other than the compress feature into a zip file. There is a .rar expander app, so I'd imagine there must be one to create that kind of file.

OK, I feel like an idiot asking this.

You'd think, as long now as I've used a Mac I'd know the answer to this, but honest to God, I pulling a mental blankage here. LOL!

I know that I can vo+shift+M on a file, and go to compress, and it then will create a zip file, and I also know that hitting command+O on a zip file will extract to the folder which I already am in, and yes I do have the unarchiver, but here lies my question. What if I want to make say... oh? I dono, say... a .RAR file, or say... a 7ZIP file. Or maybe I want to make a multi-Part RAR file, or maybe a password protected zip/RAR file, etc. In Windows, this is a sinch. I just use WinRAR. On the mac, however, are there any free, prefered, or very reasonably priced... not prefered... apps that will give me all, or at least a fair amount of this flexability?

Thanks.

Chris.
