over dinner a few nights ago, we talked about the next pope. i said that 
perhaps he would be 
South American or African, and i added there hadn't been an African pope for 
some time. 
several said there had never been an African pope.

i looked this up; Pope Gelasius, 492-96 AD. was born in Africa.

howevever, whether he was a Black African, an Arab African, or a European born 
in Africa 
isn't clear. there are no images of him.

anyone know of prior non-Euro popes?

there's also St. Augustine (nein, not the rabbit) who was African.

so, okay, it's been 1,500 years since the last non-European pope, and John Paul 
II was the 
first non-Italian in 500 years.
